I love a good ghost story. I love a good friendly ghost story. I chalk it up to that crush I had on Casper as a kid.
I watched that movie so. Many. Times.
So yes, a part of me wishes that I too had a ghost buddy. Granted, the other part of me knows I would be scared shitless by the sight of a ghost. Or the idea of being haunted.
Hell, I get freaked out when Fat Cat stares intently at nothing, like she’s seeing something invisible. Because I’m a massive baby.
But still, kind of want a ghost bff.
So, even though their relationship is tres tragic, I’m a little jealous of Wren and Lark.
Wren Noble is dead—she was born that way. Vibrant, unlike other dead things, she craves those rare moments when her twin sister allows her to step inside her body and experience the world of the living.
Lark Noble is alive but often feels she belongs in the muted Shadow Lands—the realm of the dead. Known as the crazy girl who talks to her dead sister, she doesn’t exactly fit in with the living, though a recent suicide attempt and time in a psych ward have proved to her she’s not ready to join her sister in the afterlife.
Now the guy who saved Lark’s life needs her to repay the favor. He and his friends have been marked for death by the malevolent spirit of a vicious and long-dead serial killer, and the twins—who should know better than to mess with the dead—may be their only hope of staying alive.
Let’s. Do. This.
What Intrigued Me: Ghosts! Forever and ever, ghosts! I believe I will never get tired of ghosts and ghosts stories and getting the crap scared out of me.
However, I have learned to be discerning in my taste in ghost stories. It has to be a unique approach to a familiar concept. It has to be done well. And it has to be awesome while still terrifying.
Check, check, and check.
What Hooked Me: For someone named after such a delicate bird, Lark is a badass. And I love me a badass. Give that girl a lead pipe and some kickboxing moves, and she will slay the dead.
Well, which she does.
So Buffy-esque MC? Right in my sweet spot.
What Made Me Fall In Love: SISTERS!
I am a sister. Granted, not a twin sister, but a sister. So I completely understand the mix of affection/frustration/protection that goes into that relationship. I get the feeling that your sister is the first person you want to protect and, at the same time, the first person you want to kill.
So crime fighting undead sisters? Oh hell yeah.
It’s damn entertaining.
